The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research organized a specialized scientific workshop that addressed the prospects for scientific research in Iraq and the requirements for developing its funding system and its priorities, in light of current challenges and the changing global landscape of knowledge, and in line with the paths of sustainable development and building a knowledge-based economy.
The workshop, held at the Scientific Research Authority, witnessed broad participation, including the head of the National Investment Commission, the Mayor of Baghdad, the head of the Higher Committee for the Development of Education in Iraq, undersecretaries from several ministries, the head of the Scientific Research Authority, as well as the presidents of Iraqi universities and their assistants, a number of directors general, and a select group of researchers and specialists.
Participants discussed axes of institutional cooperation and integration among state institutions, and reviewed areas of joint scientific work, in order to enhance the direction of scientific research towards addressing developmental issues of national priority, and to utilize its outputs in supporting public policies and decision-making.
The Undersecretary for Scientific Research Affairs, Dr. Haider Abdul Dhahd, presented a detailed overview of the national priorities for scientific research in Iraq. He reviewed the needs of ministries and institutions in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship, and specialized scientific research, emphasizing the importance of aligning research programs with development requirements and labor market demands.
The workshop also included a speech by the Head of the Scientific Research Authority, along with several scientific presentations that focused on providing practical solutions and addressing developmental challenges through productive scientific research, particularly highlighting the scientific and research potential offered by postgraduate studies at Iraqi universities.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants recommended developing the scientific research funding system, strengthening mechanisms for supporting research projects with developmental impact, and forming a specialized committee to develop practical proposals for updating funding policies and expanding national partnerships. This, they argued, would contribute to advancing the scientific research system and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Iraq.
